Have You Read Any of These Books?

I came across an article, 50 Books for 11 Year Olds, and after reading the post then looking through the list of books, I thought wow, I can remember reading a couple of those as a child, and a couple more just recently.  Of those recently read, it was because my kids had to for school and as I hadn’t, figured I’d catch-up!

The other interesting thing which raised a couple of questions, ‘how many books are too many or not enough for an 11 year old?’   Who should the choice of topic be left to?

Myself, I didn’t like reading much as a child and only read the books handed out at school (and to be honest, I’m not sure I even finished them ….)  It was later, when I started travelling actually, that I started to enjoy reading.

The number of books, depends on the child, one a month could be quite a challenge to some, yet one a week is nothing to others.  As for the topic choice, I say leave it to the child, whether it be a classic book or a comic, they’re reading.

Richard Davies and his colleagues put up a list of 50 suggested titles for an 11 year old and around that age group.  Below you’ll have noticed there’s a little questionnaire for you.

Now, I’ve taken just 10 titles from those 50 and ask you …

I really appreciate your participation.  Have a good week and whatever it is, newspaper, magazine, comic book or classic – enjoy and pass it to your kids – age appropriate of course!

  1. Ouch that hurts. LOL

I’m an avid reader but I have not read any of these books except for The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.
We actually had a cartoon series that we as kids watched all the time growing up.

    cheers

      Hi Akos,

Oh, I know what you mean by ‘Ouch’. After reading down the list of 50 in Richard Davies’ article, I had much the same thought. Okay, there are a few that weren’t written when I was a kid, but there is also those that were and haven’t read.

From the 10 listed here, I have read 6, but – 4 of those being just recently and only because my kids had to read them at school.

  2. Julie,

Those are all good books. I have read a few of them as I was not an avid reader as a child and as an adult I have read other books. My kids have read all of them though.

I have 5 children and 3 are avid readers. The other 2 had learning disorders that made it difficult for them to read.

My kids that loved to read books read lots of books and fast. I was always proud of how well they read but when my youngest daughter went to the library once a week, checked out 7 to 10, 500 to 1000 page books and read all of them in a week I had to take action as her school was not happening like it was supposed to(I home school). I think at one point in each of their lives I grounded them from reading books because that is all they did 24 hours a day.

I guess even a good thing can be done excessively. They are all still avid readers and read books by the hundreds.

      Hi Dee Ann,

Wow! Your kids have probably read more books than me!

I do agree with you that even too much of a good thing is not always good and understand you having to put the breaks on there. But, that is great that they do enjoy reading and I hope it stays with them.

As to whether my two ever begin to enjoy reading ?? At the moment, they do so because they have to.

Thanks Dee Ann for stopping by and sharing.

      Hi Adam and Welcome,

I only read Holes a couple of years ago when my boys worked on it for English class at school. I liked the story and although my kids do not like to read much at all, they both liked it as well. We also watched the film afterwards.

      Thanks Adam for stopping by.
