Due to recent activities from Hackers, Spammers and Thieves
there’s been alot of talk lately about protecting your blog and it’s content. And right enough too! Jacinta Dean has written an article on Blog Security and shares with her readers the plugins she uses to protect from hackers, which I too now have installed – thanks Jacinta. For the spammers, along with Akismet, I a
lso have G.A.S.P. (Growmap Anti Spambot Plugin), a tip I got from Barry Wells and Randy Smith will show you how to install it.
← ← Wouldn’t it be great if there was a backfire plugin that would do this to hackers, spammers & thieves?
Sharing our ideas, tips, experiences, reviews, news or updates is what most bloggers like to do and for someone to copy and past your content directly onto another website or blog and label themselves as the author, that’s just darn right stealing. To the blog owner who’s content has been used in this way, it’s very heartbreaking. Alot of work, research and thought has gone into writing those articles and for someone to snatch it like that, taking credit …
I’ll keep it polite here, it’s just not nice. Go visit Dee Ann Rice she’ll tell you her story of stolen blog content and how she got it sorted.
If someone’s writing an article for their readers and found content within any of my blog-posts interesting or helpful and wanted to use it, well then go right ahead, that pleases me. But, DO NOT just copy, paste and sign yourself as the author. Either you give me credit or REWITE the post in your own words. The later being the best option.
The thing is, hackers, spammers and thieves don’t give a flying-fox, so there’s no room for reason, just measures to protect. Along with the above mentioned plugins, I’ve come across one I’ve just installed Blog Protector, it’s free as are all plugins mentioned here. This will not protect your content 100%, but it will be a big deterrent. Your articles can not be either right clicked nor from the tool bar, copied. Go on, try it right now.
That’s it from me now I’d like to hear from you. Have you had any security problems and what do you use for protection? (and condoms do not count … )
Take Care
Julie

Hi Julie, Wouldn’t it be nice if we could find a plugin to give the hackers a blow back. Imagine their screens saying this machine will self destruct in 5 4 3 2 1 BOOM. That’s teach the dirty cattle truckers
In all my time blogging the worst thing to happen was thinking I’d been hacked and not being able to find the coding to block the ##@$#’s. Luckily in my case it was a faulse alarm and thanks to Jacinta I now have security measures in place to stop it happening.
It’s really surprising Julie, once I’d added the plugins that Jacinta recommended I’m getting emails of blocks, where the plugin has blocked a potential threat.
What a great find you had with the Blog Protector, canceling Right clicks, good find.
Condoms don’t count ha ha love your humour Julie and the fly fox also made me chuckle.
Thank you very much for the mention and link Julie, you’re a star
Have a fantastic SAFE week and i’ll catch you up soon my friend,

Hi Barry,
Oh yes, yourself and Ian did have a fine time there, but if it helps any, there’s been many of us who’ve learnt alot from your struggles and I’m sure you have as well. Even though it was a false alarm with the hack, now with having the plugins and seeing potential threats …. things happen for a reason. That may have saved you from actually being hacked.
The Blog Protector, simple little thing and it works.
No need to thank me for a mention, the thanks goes to you for the tip and for stopping by and leaving your comment
Take Care Barry and have a good one.

Julie,
I would love a plugin to give the hackers a blow back.
Great post on hackers stealing blog content.
I am with you. Anyone who finds my content to be useful and wants to use it. I am more than willing to have them use it. The only thing I ask is that I get the credit and maybe a link to my site. Don’t just copy and paste it into your blog and take the credit for it.
Have a great week.

Hi Dee Ann,
Yes, the hackers blow back plugin, all seem to be in the same mind about that one.
Too lazy to write their own articles and not even to edit stuff but just paste and sign their own name to it, it really stinks. They always come a cropper though and things back fire.
Thanks for stopping by Dee Ann and as the week is drawing to an end, I’ll say, have yourself a great and relaxing weekend.

Hi Julie
Following recent events on my blog, I am now more security conscious than I ever have been in the past. As Barry mentions above I too have a lot of thanks for Jacinta she was a tremendous help to us both. All the plugins she recommended have duly been installed.
I use to have automatic approval for comments, that has been changed due to the amount of spam I was receiving. I know that can be a little unfair on my readers, but I know they understand and have their support which is great.
Hmmm! Blog Protector, definitely going to check that one out Julie sound like just what the doctor ordered. Now wouldn’t it be great if there was such a Plugin that could bounce back and give the “little Hackers” some of their own medicine!
Like the condom joke made me laugh!
Great post Julie, long may you contine to have a happy place online, and thanks for sharing.
Take care, catch up soon

Hi Ian,
I have installed all the plugins recommended by Jacinta as well – I think many of us have learnt a lesson from your and Barry’s struggles there. Pleased things are back running smoothly for you both. I did notice that with your comments and fully understand.
I have a chuckle everytime I think of the hackers back-fire plugin
Thanks for stopping by and leaving your comment, always appreciated.
Have yourself a relaxing weekend Ian

Hi Julie…
Thanks for the gentle reminder about blog security. I did read Jacinta’s excellent post but have not gotten to implementing all these plug ins yet.
Have you found that they slowed down the load time of your blog at all?
I’ll just never understand how people have enough time on their hands to sit around and hack into other people’s sites and do damage…
I just don’t get it!
But we must protect…and thank goodness there are talented coders out there that know how to beat these criminals.
I must get going

Also…what Ian said about monitoring blog comments I may have to implement because Spam does see to be picking up…

Hi Kathy,
I was a bit concerned with the loading times, but to date I have not had any problems. If it is slow loading at any time, I open another site to check it and find it’s either my computer or the connection.
I don’t think hackers have anything else, that’s how they’ve the time. They want to destroy what someone else has because they haven’t got it. Yes, the spamming seems to be out in droves justnow, it’s probably a good idea to monitor all posts.
Thanks for stopping by Kathy

Hi Julie,
I told Jacinta I wish they made a plugin where the hacker’s fingers would fall off if they messed around with you
Sharing this information about security is very helpful for all of us.
Stealing content is such a lazy way to get by. It’s so wrong to take the work of others.
Hacking into ones site is such an intrusion, it’s almost like breaking into your house and messing it all up.
No matter what this is all wrong and we should all do our part to fight these bast#*(rs by spreading and sharing all this info. Good job Julie
Keep on keep on,

Hi Terry,
Oh, that is soo funny, having their fingers fall off
A bit more of a permanent effect than the computer blowing up.
After reading about the problems Barry and Ian had, thank goodness it was a false alarm as far as being hacked but a lesson learnt for all of us to be security conscious. You’re right, it is an intrusion into ones house, breaking in the back door.
Thank you Terry for taking the time to stop by.

Hi Julie
I have to agree about the idea of a plugin that responded to hackers and spammers and destroyed their computers – justice.
My Askimet spam count is now approaching 100K and as for hackers, well to me they are sad people who need to get a life.
Thanks for the tip on Blog Protector, I will have a look at that.

Hello Bill and Welcome,
As for the hackers, well said Bill.
That is amazing near 100k spammers! Just as well for Askimet or you’d have to sift through the damn pests. No worries with the tip, Jacinta’s post is worth a read about the plugins.
Thanks for stopping by Bill and yes, your post did bring back some wonderful memories, thank you.
